MAGPUL’S 20LR M110/MK11 7.62 MAGAZINE

Since the introduction of the PMAG in 2006, Magpul Industries has set the standard for reliable polymer magazines for the M16 platform. Prior to the PMAG, the best the market had to offer were from Thermold and Orlite, which were marginal at best. The use of polymer for magazine bodies have definite advantages in weight savings and durability, as seen in our Magazine Drop Test. The PMAG has earned itself an excellent reputation among end users, many of whom prefer the polymer PMAG over USGI aluminum magazines. While I believe aluminum USGI magazines have their place, the current generation PMAG is an excellent choice for a duty magazine.

Several years ago, Magpul introduced the PMAG 20LR. Designed for use in M110/Mark 11 type rifles, the PMAG 20LR filled a need for an inexpensive, high quality, lightweight magazine that is readily available for purchase. The magazine was also designed for use with cartridges with long OALs such as the M118LR.

The PMAG 20LR brings the impact resistance and durability to the 7.62 rifle platform, and also utilizes a self-lubricating, high reliability follower. Like all original PMAGs, each magazine comes with a dust cover to protect the feed lips during storage as well as keep any debris out of the magazine.

Since the PMAG 20LR’s introduction, several high quality semi-automatic rifles have come onto the market, to include the LaRue OBR/Predator 7.62 and Colt CM901. Over the past couple of years, I have had the opportunity to run the PMAG 20LR in both platforms and the magazine has proven to be every bit as reliable and durable as their 5.56mm PMAG. The magazines can be loaded to 20 rounds and still seated without undue effort even when the weapon has a closed bolt. Empty PMAGs freely dropped out of my LaRue OBR 7.62 as well as the Colt CM901 and my new Smith & Wesson M&P 10 rifle.

As with all MagPul magazines, the PMAG 20LR can be easily disassembled for cleaning and maintenance. Simply press the detent in the floor plate with the tip of a round and slide the plate forward. The retaining plate, spring, and high quality follower come out readily for inspection.

At a retail price of around $20, this is a no brainer. But as with nearly all things that bear the MagPul name, the biggest problem is getting a hold of one of these magazines. Due to tremendous demand coupled with the current political climate, these magazines might as well be unobtanium unless you have friends in high places. The good news is that MagPul is feverishly working to meet demand and production will eventually catch up. Contact your favorite dealer and soon you will find that you’ll like these magazines as much as I do.

  1. Maybe I should get 10 of those mag while I can purchase as a Coloradan privilege from Magpul…..

  2. I’ve run over a thousand malfunction free rounds in dirty conditions from mine in a LaRue .308. As soon as my Colt 901 arrives, these will be the primary magazines for that system and they are a solid, proven magazine in these rifles.

  3. I have a PTR91 GI (H&K G3 clone), would these mags fit and function in that rifle?

    • Sean, these magazines are only compatible with rifles that use the M110/SR-25/DPMS pattern magazines. Your PTR-91/G3 uses its own magazines, so not they won’t work with your rifle.

  4. I purchased these for use in a DPMS LR308 rifle. They are half to 1/3 the price of SR25 metal magazines. The rifle came with 2 dpms mags that would reliably fail. The Magpul mags have completely eliminated the failures. I have no problems with anything ran through the rifle from 115grn frangible to 180 softpoints.
