Dave Spaulding needs no introduction. A been there done that (for real, and for a very long time) instructor recognized by students and colleagues as one of the very best. I expected top notch instruction and some novel technique pointers from his new video (available online via Panteao Productions subscription, the premier online training gig, or for purchase in DVD format), and got more than expected. For me this is a strong two thumbs way up way to spend two plus hours. You will want to rewind often or watch it twice start to finish.
Dave is supremely prepared and articulate. Not a second is wasted with anything nonessential. Economy and efficiency in explanation and motion are ever present. His sayings – “time is life” and “never give up the known for the unknown” resonated with me. He demonstrates techniques – both classic and his own — effortlessly. This is an instructor one hundred percent comfortable with where he is, what he is saying, and the operation of his gear. He convinced me he was selling nothing other than his desire that I win, should I suffer the bad luck to be in a gunfight.
The video’s title says much. This is not a defensive shooting or high speed, low drag how to shoot better drills video, it is a video that analyzes the aspects of handgun skills essential for winning (not just surviving) a gunfight. Myths are challenged (without being disrespectful), and classic doctrine is analyzed, with Dave’s suggested improvements offered for the viewer’s consideration. Dave’s style is clear and composed, never overbearing or didactic. He explains and demonstrates (on the clock) variations of classic techniques, including grip, ready positions, draw, one-handed shooting, malfunction (stovepipe and double feed) clearing, reloads, and shooting on the move. I rewound several of these chapters making notes of what new techniques I definitely wanted to assess for my own skillset.
I have been shooting handguns for more than 20 years and have been privileged to be in the company of many of the best trainers and competitive shooters. What Dave Spaulding offers will add to your skillset regardless of why you carry or shoot handguns. You will enjoy learning from him too. Seems like I always have something scheduled when Dave comes to town, and I must miss his class. A change in my scheduling technique is clearly in order.

I have watched 90% of this video. I have to say, I’m very impressed with Dave’s presentation. He teaches a few courses per year that are a few hours from home. I think I will sign up for one this summer.
Dave explains various draw methods (pick one or two and practice is the bottom line) from under a covering garment in the June 2013 issue of Combat Handguns.
