Photo of the Day: Glock 17 RTF with Mods

Some ATEi and Sentinel Design love on Tim’s Glock 17 RTF.

This Glock 17 RTF serves as the test platform for my RMR 07. Though Hilton, Erick, and other 10-8 crew have gone through more RMRs in the past several months than underwear, I wanted to put some time in on the concept so I don’t go the way of the Blackberry (remember those?)

Note that most of the folks that comment about how their RMR’s are working just fine appear to only have low round counts through the platform, or don’t really shoot them at all. I will report back at 1000 round intervals assuming the optic holds up that long.

HK P30 Enhancements

I have been carrying a 9mm HK P30 for my primary pistol for a while after having epic issues with my last newly purchased Glock 19. I have been very happy with the HK P30 with its out of the box performance. It is disturbingly reliable, has consistent and very positive extraction and ejection (even without a magazine), is more mechanically accurate than its more popular competitors, and actually doesn’t need anything done to carry as a working pistol. Mine is a V2 LEM that is the heavier of the LEM set-ups. It has the HK luminescent sights that are not tritium (due to a ban in Europe), but do work really well when simply hit with a light. I set my guns up with small back straps and side panels. The P30 is one of the most adaptable pistols made to tailor the grip to an individuals taste.

Apex Tactical’s Gen 4 Glock Failure Resistant Extractor Now Available

Apex Tactical’s long awaited Failure Resistant Extractor for the Glock Gen 4 is now available for ordering from their web store. Many shooters who have bought Glocks within the last few years have discovered their Glocks are ejecting cases erratically or even malfunctioning with stovepipe type malfunctions. My personal Glock 17 RTF worked fine for about 1000 rounds and suddenly began to fail to eject every 100 rounds or so. It was quite frustrating.

As mentioned in a previous blog post, I received a prototype extractor from Apex a while back, which improved the consistency of ejection and extraction of all the Glocks in which I dropped it in. This fix from Apex was able to do what countless other “fixes” from the Internet Peanut Gallery could not. In fact, it worked so well, my Glock was able to reliably extract and eject cases without a magazine inserted in the gun. This is something Glocks have never been able to do from the factory.

Note that this version is specifically for Gen 4 Glocks only, and a Gen 3 version will be coming along soon.

Apex Tactical Glock Extractor

For thirty years, Glock 9mm handguns have been nearly synonymous with reliability, but recently, many Glock owners have been suffering from erratic and sometimes failed ejection with their Glock 9mm pistols. Numerous theories populate the various Internet gun forums, but so far there has been no definitive answer from Glock as to the cause, or a solution. Glock Customer Service responses range from total denial, instructions to send the gun in for repair, or sending out replacement parts to local armorers.

It seems the erratic ejection issues appeared somewhere around the “M” serial number prefix in the Gen 3 9mm pistols, and possibly affect all Gen 4 9mm guns.

One popular “fix” is to obtain the latest Gen 4 9mm ejector (Part Number 30274), which for most people, seems to make ejection a little more consistent but doesn’t always solve the problem. Others recommend the HRED extractor plunger assembly by White Sound Defense, but this product did nothing for me.

Glock 17 vs. M&P 9?

Glock 17 RTF vs. S&W M&P 9
A couple days ago, the Vuurwapenblog responded to GunNuts Media blogger Shelley Sargent’s question: Why the M&P?. Shelley eloquently highlights some of the advantages of the M&P over the Glock, including truly ambidextrous controls, interchangeable backstraps to accommodate different sized hands, and location of manufacture.
I own both, and having put many rounds through multiple copies of both models (and with all due respect to Shelley, whom we at 10-8 hold in high regard,) I have to side with the Vuurwapen blogger on this one, mainly due to the accuracy issues of the M&P 9mm. With nearly any box stock Glock 17, I can hold better than three inches at 25 yards using factory ammunition. With most M&Ps, my groups at the same distance using the same ammunition is around eight inches.
To add insult to injury, most M&Ps come with nearly unusably bad triggers out of the box. The end user must either send the pistol back to the S&W Performance Center for a sear upgrade, or purchase the excellent Apex Tactical Hard Sear to have a pistol with a decent trigger. Glocks consistently come with workable triggers right out of the box.

Glocks Available in Flat Dark Earth

For you Glock shooters (I am a closet Glock fan as well), Lipsey’s has contracted a run of Glock factory pistols in Flat Dark Earth. They will be available in nine different models that span both Gen 3 and Gen 4 lines.

Due to the expense involved, it is not likely they will be CA approved.
