And in comes the next innovative product from SPD Tool, the SPD Range Rod.
I’ve known SPDTool’s owner, Scott Conti, for longer than SPD has existed. He is the brain behind the SPDTool Model S which is a pocket sized multi-tool that fits most all SIG Sauer pistols, and the Model R which is the same size but made for the Smith and Wesson Revolver. Scott is a stand up guy, a shooter, and a friend.
The Range Rod is pretty innovative. It serves as an impromptu cleaning rod, a punch to clear barrel obstructions, a magnet, a rule for measuring groups, and my personal favorite, a safe dry firing device. The SPDTool Range Rod comes with a 9mm sized threaded adapter that can be placed in the chamber with the rod threaded to it and used for dry fire. The Range Rod is constructed of 6061 Aluminum and threaded to accept #8-32 brush and patch attachments for cleaning.
The rod will protrude from the barrel as a visual reference to that the gun is unloaded during dry fire. The red adapter effectively acts as a snap cap during dry fire and adds to the life of the firing pin or striker. At this time, Scott tells me that the dry fire adapter that I was given was a prototype only, and is not available for purchase. The Range Rod that is commercially available only comes with the magnetic tip.
I’ve been carrying the SPDTool Range Rod in my stuff for a few months now, and have been using it as a teaching aid when teaching classes.
The SPDTool Range Rod comes in assorted colors, and retails for around $15.00. It is available from Brownells, and Gray Guns INC. All SPDTool products are proudly made in the USA.
