The Liberator – Discreet AR-15 Gun Case

I recently swapped out my old truck for a new model.  Nothing all that exciting there except that I have had to re-fit all of my weapons and equipment in the new truck.  One thing that always drove me crazy about the old truck was the way I mounted my AR style rifle.  I had it in a roof rack over the back seat.  It was out of the way and secure, but nearly impossible to grab in an emergency.  It also stood out like a red dress at a funeral if you looked into the cab of the truck.  Because of this I opted to find a more suitable solution for what is, for me personally, required equipment in my truck.  Remember, it is not paranoid, it is prepared.

The Liberator easily fits my 16″ AR style rifle with Aimpoint red dot and Surefire X300 Ultra.

I asked around and a good friend pointed me towards The Liberator Quick Draw AR-15 Gun Case, made by Renegade Ridge Tactical.  It solved my numerous small problems and has simplified my rifle carry concerns. It even came with a “Double Down” feature which is a detachable magazine case that also doubles as a discreet pistol case.  The Liberator came with two sewn in heavy duty carry handles and two utility straps with three sewn in “D” rings.  This creates a very adaptable system for carrying, hanging it in the truck or just storing it away in a closet.

100% American made, solidly built and very discreet.

Overall, the Cordura nylon case is extremely well made with robust seams and stitching.  The zippers are large #10 YKK, with heavy duty pulls.  The pull down tab which enables the Quick-Zip-Draw access the rifle with just a single grab and pull movement is rubberized to ensure a solid grip under pressure and is held in place by a single snap.  This fastener easily lets go when necessary but keeps the case opening sealed shut to avoid prying eyes. The external dimensions fo the case are 11″ at the widest point, 2.5″ deep and 36″ high.  My 16″ AR style, Arsenal AK style and 16″ FAL style rifles all fit equally well in this case.

The zippers meet at the top with an extra snap that doubles as a quick pull open tab. All combine to make access simple and intuitive. Grab and pull is as easy as it gets.

The Quick-Zip-Draw system of the Liberator makes access easy and fast.

The Double Down case measures 9″ x 6″ x 2″ and is equally well constructed from the same quality materials as The Liberator.  It attaches to the side of The Liberator using a MOLLE style attachment. There are two elastic loops sewn inside the case that easily hold two 30 round AR magazines or a pistol and spare magazines.  Never being good at following directions I pushed it and the case will hold 3 full 30 round AR-15 magazines or a M&P9, spare mag and a 30 round PMag.  The point being it is versatile and you can use it as you wish.  The color match to the case is perfect and the overall shape doesn’t scream magazine case.

The Double Down attaches to The Liberator and is secure, yet easily removed when necessary.

The Double Down securely holds 2 AR-15 magazines. More if you try.

The folks at Renegade Ridge Tactical, which is a division of Crooked Horn Outfitters did a fantastic job thinking this one through. It is shaped to look any number of things and doesn’t cry out gun.  Usually a shooter has to sacrifice accessibility for highly discreet portability.  The Liberator case brought the two together and provides a new level of confidence in my every day carry rifle carry system.  Everything I need is in a single location making “grab and go” a snap.  I hang my rifle on the back of my seat and I am good to go.

The Liberator hangs on the back of my seat and is easily moved or accessed when necessary.

If you’re looking for that discreet way to carry your rifle and spare mags without looking like a gun person, the Liberator case does the job.  It is available in Black, Coyote, Grey, ATAC.  I understand that a Pink/Black combination is available as a special order item. Regardless of the color of the case or the type of rifle, you will be well served with The Liberator and Double Down system.

  1. It looks an oddly shaped rifle bag, but still a rifle bag. Get something that was not designed to be a rifle case. A fishing rod case, keyboard case etc, large toolbox, wrap it in your grandma’s favorite quilt whatever… And also avoid those typical ‘operator’ style clothes.
