Review: Blue Force Gear’s RACKminus Chest Rig

BFG’s RACKminus loaded with Helium Whisper pouches

At SHOT Show, our friends at Blue Force Gear released the RACKminus, a super lightweight chest rig made of a high tech laminate they call ULTRAcomp that is extremely strong, durable and lightweight. A while back, Blue Force Brittney sent out a sample of the RACKminus along with some of their Ten Speed pouches, which use Helium Whisper technology. I had a chance to run it on the range for a bit and thought I’d share my thoughts.

We’ll start with the pouches. For those not familiar with Blue Force Gear’s line, the Helium Whisper series of pouches replaces the standard plastic backed cordura straps that thread through MOLLE webbing with a super thin, lightweight, and very strong laminate. This alone reduces the weight of the attachment system by about half. Helium whisper also eliminates the need for metal snaps that can become secondary projectiles. I found the Helium Whisper to be no more difficult to install than standard MOLLE straps and the weight savings is welcome.

I opted to use mostly Ten Speed pouches, as they are among the most versatile magazine pouches in the BFG lineup. Back when Ten Speed was first introduced, I admit that I was skeptical that the elastic would hold up under long term use. I thought that with the abrasion from use, along with the constant insertion and removal of magazines, that the elastic would simply tear, stretch, or otherwise wear out. I was pleasantly surprised that Ten Speed pouches outlived my Eagle Industries kydex reinforced FB pouches and have quickly become my favorite open top vest mounted pouches. The only downside to the Ten Speed system is that it typically takes two hands to insert a magazine into the pouch. The elastic is extremely tight to begin with, but with time and use, it breaks in.

The RACKminus can be packed into a fairly small package, even with pouches installed.

Weighing in at only 13 ounces with all pouches installed, the RACKminus weighs less than any other chest rig I have used. It’s extremely versatile and features three rows and twelve columns of webbing. In my configuration with a standard double M4 magazine pouch, a Ten Speed triple mag pouch and Ten Speed double mag pouch, I can hold five M4 mags and two pistol magazines with rows of webbing to spare.

The RACKminus is durable, versatile, and super lightweight. If you’re in need of a super lightweight, durable and versatile chest rig that will hold a bunch of magazines, a multitool and a blowout kit, this may be exactly what you’re looking for.
