FIRST LOOK: GRAYMAN KNIVES SUB-SAHARAN

Grayman’s 5-inch Sub-Saharan is small enough to be practical, but can take on big task

This is for all you knife guys (and gals) out there. A few years back, Cameron Hopkins introduced me to Mike over at Grayman Knives. He spent some time showing me various knives from his catalog, and the first impression I got was: these knives were designed to be used. Hand ground from high carbon 1095, these knives come with a toothy edge that is perfect for practical use. High carbon 1095 is a tough steel with quite a bit of abrasion resistance which means it holds an edge quite well. Unfortunately, due to its low chromium content, it is susceptible to rust. Thus, Mike coats the Sub-Saharan in KG Gunkote, an excellent polymer type finish that is exceptionally resistant to corrosion. Just keep the exposed edge coated with a good rust inhibitor (like FrogLube) and you are good to go.

The handles consist of Micarta scales with the edges thoughtfully bevelled for end user comfort. The blade is ground with a single bevel, which makes the blade hefty enough for chopping even though it is a mid size knife. The single bevel is ground for a right handed user.

The knives come with free custom engraving if you like, and includes a versatile kydex-reinforced, nylon sheath that can be belt or MOLLE mounted.

Keep your eyes out for a full review of the knife at a later date. In the meantime, check out Grayman Knives’ website: http://www.graymanknives.com

  1. I have been a Grayman knives user for many years and trained with Mike for much longer. These are knives that often aren’t as pretty as others, but they are designed to be beaten. I know guys overseas who love them because they almost dare you to abuse them. Another benefit to Grayman knives if that the owner is much more of a user than a maker, so the designs function exceptionally well because Mike really knows what is needed in a field/combat blade.

  2. I agree 100% that Grayman Knives are begging to be used. These are reasonably priced knives that are built for performance. Mike’s latest work has evolved and I find the knives as “pretty” as many knives by custom makers that charge twice as much.
